The circling around Catalina could have allowed time for trouble shooting before deciding whether to go on or not or it could have been a matter of fuel dumping before landing at LAX, which would have better repair possibilities, rebooking opportunities, emergency services, etc. than SNA. (I don't know the numbers, but I would guess that LAX has a longer runway too, which could be important in an emergency situation.)
