USA<>AKL is a difficult route for non-status upgraders. For UA, you may want to look at PremPlus seating, it has the look and feel of domestic first class. Ditto for NZ's premium economy.

NZ flights have a upgrade bid program, UA flight may offer a discount upgrade option
