Could you have just requested SDS for AAA-BBB (essentially making it look like you're planning to take the original BBB-CCC flight) and then after you're confirmed on the new AAA-BBB flight, ask for SDC on BBB-CCC? This should work if the rule is once a standby, always a standby. However, there could be problems if the new AAA-BBB + old BBB-CCC combination results in more than four hours at BBB, so that it's no longer a connection. However, that can easily happen if only the first standby segment clears.
