obviously, but what you're missing is they wouldn't confirm me on BBB-CCC even AFTER AAA-BBB cleared, and would only let me stay on standby. I confirmed this with the redcoat at the BBB gate AND also confirmed it after the fact in a discussion with customer care (who ended up giving me the $200 involuntary downgrade payment plus fare difference, but confirmed that what happened is how it's designed).
Could you have just requested SDS for AAA-BBB (essentially making it look like you're planning to take the original BBB-CCC flight) and then after you're confirmed on the new AAA-BBB flight, ask for SDC on BBB-CCC? This should work if the rule is once a standby, always a standby. However, there could be problems if the new AAA-BBB + old BBB-CCC combination results in more than four hours at BBB, so that it's no longer a connection. However, that can easily happen if only the first standby segment clears.
