I'm not sure what route you are referring to in terms of 75,000 Virgin points in Upper Class... You would pay substantially more miles than that for South Africa or the western USA.
But one thing to keep in mind is that you will pay a very large amount of £ as taxes and surcharges when you book a reward flight. So, instead of a £2,000 ticket for free, you'd be paying £800-1,000 plus all those miles.
You will also have to be very flexible in order to find award space in Upper Class.
