The frequency with with EF pings the reservation system for availability increases as the flight departure approaches. It should be pretty frequent starting at T-24h - I would hope at LEAST hourly if not more, but EF doesn't disclose AFAIK. Were your "hours late" notifications further in advance or close-in. If close-in, maybe it was a delivery problem with the network/email.
