Have you checked with your bank to make sure you paid for the ticket? Banks don’t release money to airlines unless a ticket number is provided, so if there was an issue in BA’s ticket issue process you should not have been debited the money. That’s the theory anyway - can’t guarantee it always happens but it’s a good start in trying to figure out what happened.
