This Times piece highlighted by the OP is a familiar tale, the content of which shares certain characteristics with posts frequently seen in FT over the years : some stuff comes across as perfectly valid ; some seems rather more dubious ; and some can perhaps be filed away as irrelevant.

On many levels, internet discussion fora / web-based blogs - whether of a ‘positive’ or ‘negative’ tone - are little different from the print & broadcast media. By which I mean, they are all (à la Curate’s Egg) good in parts.

The lines between subjectivity and reality will forever be blurred, and each of us will, understandably, have our individual perspectives as to what we choose to believe, and / or to accept at face value.

As on so many occasions, Winston Churchill encapsulated the theme rather succinctly when he said “These, Gentlemen, are the opinions on which I base my facts”

In later times, a certain Arsène Wenger, whose words carried somewhat less historical weight (but which nonetheless attracted a fair degree of sports media interest) would bring his own personal musing to the traditional beauty being-in-the-eye-of-the-beholder mantra with his intentionally sarcastic “Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife at home” quip ☺️
