I "think" you can apply for a FTV for the inbound flight after having flown the outbound. There's nothing in the T&Cs that says outbound flights only are eligible, just that you need to apply for a FTV before check in closes.
As it is a reward booking BA will issue the FTV and then cancel it and refund your Avios and any cash. You will not get the 2-4-1 back as you will have flown the outbound sector.
