Might be worth it if you can afford the time. In my (of course limited) experience, the officers at Sault Ste Marie were friendly and helpful. At Detroit, the Canadian officers were nice, but the US ones were rather churlish. And it is a nice drive up north.
If they had Monday morning appointments, I'd be all over Sault Ste Marie. (Small child getting Nexus as well). The US officers in Detroit never even asked me anything - luck of the draw, I guess. I'll keep checking if something better shows up.
