I do realize that but I have cancelled the everyday preferred and green card just recently within a month of each other. If I cancel the delta in short order I could be in pop up jail. I also want to keep my 5/24 count low bc I want to open up a Hyatt card

I'm not sure whether a rash of cancellations lands you in pop-up jail, so much as sock-drawering cards (which AMEX apparently hates?) but I am not an expert on that. The 5/24 concern is certainly valid. But unless something has changed, although they read you scary language when you cancel a DL Plat/Reserve about losing your certificates, in practice the overwhelming majority of past data points is that once the companion certs land in your account, they're yours to keep, and you can book them with any AMEX (you can also use eCredits now, don't know if you can use an eCredit to cover the entire cost or if you have to put at least $0.01 on a card)
