From my understanding if both pax have the same last name it won't work either. When the flight goes to airport control around 48 hours before departure the controller will move pax together if they have the same last name and have selected window and aisle.
I have definitely had that an couple of times e.g travelling with family, across a couple of different PNR’s and rows. At 48hours we’re all shifted to the same row eg a Exit Row.
It was typically better off, eg we couldn’t all get a seat originally in the same space+ row.
