My spouse is in this category as well (card expired in February 2020, so just passed the 2-year benefits window). My son will be in this position in May if we aren't able to secure interviews by then, and I will be hit with it later this year.
I've already warned her that she shouldn't expect to get PreCheck benefits for our trip this weekend. If it shakes out differently I shall report back!
I’m afraid it won’t. The PreCheck benefits drop off right at the “730 day after expiry” mark. We experienced that specifically between December 2021 (at just under 730) - they were in force still - to into new year 2022 (after 730) - they dropped off.
