When I say touristy area, I mean that's primarily where tourists stay when they visit there. I live in Mexico City and know where most of them stay when they come to CDMX. Either Polanco, Condesa or Roma Norte. Those are the top places and I avoid those areas.
Polanco is pretty different from Condesa or Roma Norte. Polanco doesn't appeal to me, but Condesa and (especially) Roma Nte are pretty nice and not at all "touristy" in the traditional (i.e., Fishermen's Wharf or Times Square) sense.
