At LHR I wouldn't expect this to be a problem so long as someone experienced is handling the matter, it's a well known feature of Schengen. Incidentally it's also 100% acceptable for a Brit to arrive back to the UK on an expired passport, even BNO citizens, but that's much harder for airlines to handle.
