I've posted about this on other relevant threads before. Mine never worked reliably (less than 25% of the time) until one day I had a rather unpleasant experience with an official, and since then it has always worked, sometimes too quickly - once the gate opened the instant my passport made contact with the scanner.

Maybe they are not related, and also the face-matching algorithm tolerance may be set differently, but it definitely feels like they are related.
