Infant in arms for half of trip

Good morning FT! We booked a flight XXX-ATL-LGA-ATL-XXX. We have a one year old and our family lives in ATL. We were hoping to drop our son off with family in ATL and then carry on with our journey and then pick up in ATL on the return. When I called DL to add infant in arms to XXX-ATL and ATL-XXX, they said they couldn't ticket an infant in arms for one leg of the trip. They said they'd have to reticket (and of course reprice) into two round trips for 4 one ways. This change drastically increased the cost so I passed.

Is this a HUCA situation? I'm traveling this week and will ask at the Sky Club. Any other thoughts or recommendations? I'm sure this has been done before. Thank you in advance! I'm PM if that matters.
