You can use Plus Points to upgrade from J to F on LH or NH, but not LX or any other *A airlines. To do so, you must be booked in J, C, or D class. (While there are some anecdotal reports of Z class on NH being allowed, I personally wouldn't count on that.)

The alternative, as you say, is to gift them to friends and family.
