I guess with the 14 days you are hinting at EU261, but the 14 days are only really about compensation for the cancellation not about rerouting requirements. Also you are flying a non EU carrier from Japan to the EU so the scope of EU261 is limited. The 14 days are not based on when you contact the airline, but when the cancellation is announced.
A very important point for you will be whether it is a return leg of a ticket or it is the first leg of a ticket. If the latter they can more or less just elect to cancel your ticket and refund you for it. If the former, and it originated in the EU, duty of care and rerouting obligations under EU would apply.
