And this is why EVERYONE should have Settings - Face ID & Passcode - Erase Data set to ON. Though after the first five incorrect attempts iOS starts disabling the phone for longer and longer periods between attempts.

Then they couldn't get a court order. Apple hands over user data to the government all the time; it just needs a court order. Was the prosecution's case so bad that they couldn't get an order to Apple to hand it over?
