Not a problem at all. I will pay good attention when doing OLCI and report back.

Yes, that's what I'm getting these days too. Looks like they closed that loophole then.

That is really annoying.

Pre-seat selection is apparently only available where the flight is ticketed by A3 or OA, and that is confirmed in the notes in the seat selection policy on their website. Presumably there is a reason for it other than A3 deliberately disadvantaging passengers who have been ticketed through other airlines but it doesn't make for a great customer experience. Having made a number of redemptions over the years on other airlines with BA Avios, I've never come across this kind of issue. Even using some SQ miles to book an Alaska Airlines flight, a non-Star Alliance partner, seat selection was no issue to the point that adding OneWorld status to the booking opens up seating reserved for OneWorld Elites despite it having been ticketed by SQ.
Interesting, I've never read the notes about seat selection policy and had always assumed that if it's not available online, you can just ring them to sort it as I have done many times. As you say, there must be some kind of technical limitation, though I've no idea what it is, as simply doing it because it's not their ticket stock makes zero sense from a customer service perspective.

I would be pretty confident of getting 2 seats together during OLCI to be honest. Just make sure you go on as soon as it opens 48 hours before each individual flight. You can't check in any earlier for the second flight when you check in for the first online, you have to go back in once you're within the 48 hour window.

I would definitely try that. The phone agents are normally really helpful and the waiting times short. I'd be really surprised if it were impossible to pre-select seats but the answer from A3 may indeed be "Computer says no". Definitely get them to put a note in the PNRs to "link" them at least.
