Ah ok, you'll be fine then in city hotel, just didn't want you to think you'd be having some blissful romantic experience in Chiang mai. There were some good restaurants (not as good as Bangkok though), there are some nice temples, but we had higher expectations than what it was. I agree direct domestic flight is nice vs Laos. Siam Reap would also be a great option if you've never been I would chose over chiang mai.
Thanks! We're fully expecting to be out and about, exploring. But I'm also interested in the surrounding countryside, so I'll take a look at some of the resorts that are closer to the city. Will consider Siam Reap as well. Just don't want to overwhelm ourselves with too much travel. I have a tendency to cram a lot of destinations in and spread myself a little thin. 3 destinations over the course of two weeks felt like a decent balance.
