This might be the best strategy. I don't think the room upgrade should remove the club 91, but it could prevent an upgrade from going through... Typically, only rooms on the 14th floor are sold with Club 91 access, but you can have access being on a different floor.
I know that all the suites can be sold with Club91, as it says so on the website, but just never seen it as an option on marriott.com or the app. Incidentally, they do seem to be selling club suites on Expedia/Booking.com but the uplift is like $300 a day!
