I just assume that if I'm paying for business class, there will be a meal (unless it's an exceptionally short flight, where I'd just expect drinks and a snack). I don't think it's wrong to expect to be fed when that is very much the norm on airlines that are not United.
Also important to note that because United is the only American Star Alliance airline, lots of people connecting from international flights on reputable airlines effectively get stuck with United for their final domestic leg. And they likely didn't realize that "business class" on United is a fare class bucket only, and does not actually imply a better experience. Honestly, google flights should have a warning whenever an itinerary includes a leg on united. You can't even filter effectively because united operated flights also get sold by other airlines as their own.

Oh you mean like in the united club, that might have some soup or granola bars if you're lucky, the coffee machine is always broken, and the complimentary alcohol is hobo-grade?
People who come from other airlines and get stuck on United experience a massive downgrade.
