Question LHR arrival, then same day departure - COVID test needed?

Coming up I have a flight from the US into LHR, then another back to the US a couple hours later. In fact I won’t be leaving the airport. I got an email from the airline reminding me that COVID tests are required to reenter the US.

Now technically this is not a layover, but practically it is. Do I have any chance of having the testing requirement waived?

If I can’t get it waived, then I’ll have to think about testing. The past few times I’ve gone to England, COVID tests were required for entry. Is that policy still in place? If so, can I use the same test for entry into England and then reentry into the US, seeing as it’s less than a day apart?

If the policy for COVID tests to enter England is no longer in place, then can my test for reentry into the US be *from* the US? That would save me all the trouble of having to get tested at Heathrow, which is relatively expensive from my experience.
