This was one of the first major resorts in the valley. If they haven't taken them down, there are a bunch of cool pics of the early days in the main hallway of the reception building. My favorite is Jimmy Stewart in the chow line.
Ownership destroyed the soul of this place when they converted it to a convention property by building the massive new convention center and redoing the rooms in Marriott corporate. But it's still the best location in the valley with gorgeous views and landscaping.
I had not stayed before, and those photos were still up and very interesting. I would be interested to see what the rooms looked like prior. Frankly, Marriott corporate design isn't always a bad thing, IMO, and many of my friends and relatives from Arizona thought the room had good character (especially the wooden ceiling beams.) Of course, I could be wrong.
