Try living on 20k gross in London and then let us know. I've done it, many moons ago when a single room in a shared basement flat was still going for £500 a month plus bills, and by the end of the month I was
really checking every price of every single thing I'd bought at the supermarket.
It is a poverty salary. The London living wage is £11.05/hr and over a year of 37.5 hours/week it should be equal to £21.5k or thereabouts. And even that is supremely tight.
