As noted, you can ask and sometimes it does happen for free, reasons can be if it is a disruption day, or that you get a kind agent.
Would it not make more sense to apply for an FTV and then purchase the new flight on its own?
I was out in London a few weeks back and wanted to move my flight to later, I moved my flight twice by booking a new flight and requesting an FTV for the existing.
