The topic of paid for seat selection has been debated to death here, and it just is BA’s commercial model. And is a model I for one enjoy the benefits of by having status and thus being able to avail myself of a wider availability close to departure.

For those complaining, your fare would just be correspondingly higher if they were to include the benefit of seat selection.
