Per the OP, seems like UA has absolutely no record of anything on 3/16, only starting on the 17th when they called UA. Just wondering if this was some sort of phishing scam to gain access to the OP's account and/or PNR and they never actually were speaking with United on the 16th.
Along the same line, could OP have googled the phone number and then accidentally called one of the "paid" travel services pretending to be United that perform flight changes/cancellations/rebookings for huge service fees? It would help to know for sure whether there never was an upgrade or there was an upgrade but UA cancelled it?
