Some info others may find useful. I've now completed my first trip with a NEXUS card now expired for more than 2 years. My previous trip was the day before the post-2 year mark and everything was normal.

I entered the US using the GE kiosks at LAX and the machine told me to see agent immediately. The agent told me my GE was expired, asked me to update my photo, and waved me through.
I entered Canada using the NEXUS kiosks at YYC and nothing was out of the ordinary. Sometime last year these kiosks updated my photo.
I took 2 TSA Pre-Check eligible flights with different airlines while in the US but did not receive PRECHEK on either of the boarding passes.
