Best endeavours clearly does not mean running or getting into a panic. Now this is where direct flights can make life so much easier but particularly in countries with bub/spoke models of aviation this isn't anything that is terrible. It certainly isn't something I particularly worry about in my travels.
Ordinarily, I’d agree, but being brought over for five days work and only getting to perform for four would have been deeply uncomfortable for MrLapLap. He still would have to get what he had to do done, and he barely managed it as it was.

I dropped the ball on this occasion, that’s complacency for you. There is probably a psychological lesson in all of this, when he’s put on economy flights that cost a few hundred pounds I’ve insisted on pouring over them looking for all the pitfalls. Seeing that he was actually going to get some actual tier points this time and Avios that corresponded with miles flown, as well as the price of the ticket, I must have confused cost and value. I got dazzled. Won’t be doing that again!
