The Ivens, Autograph Collection - Lisbon, Portugal [Master Thread]

Introduction The Ivens Hotel used to be a radio station and after a multi-year renovation they opened 7 months ago. Based on my stay I have mixed feelings about this hotel in part because the room looked great but it was somewhat small considering the price paid. Room In my opinion this hotel is a better fit for solo travellers or for couples who do not need much space. I did not expect high occupancy in March but I was wrong; one day before check-in I could see the suites were not available and my upgrade was tentatively a very modest room equally small as entry level but with a better view and a balcony. For a hotel in this price range, having a room 22 square meters is not overly attractive to me in terms of value proposition. I could see the corner rooms (35 sqm) were available online so I asked in the chat function of the Marriott app why no upgrade to that room type and they corrected themselves and gave me a corner room. By the time I checked in the next day, even corner rooms were gone and only the small rooms remained so I dodged a bullet, if I did not reach out proactively, probably I would have been in a tiny room. Nevertheless, I am not sure how they count the square footage because it is questionable whether my corner room was 35 sqm - there might be some fuzzy accounting going on. For sure they must count the cushioned seating below the windows and even then I was skeptical. Anyway, other than the size of the room, I liked the style and the room was finished to a high standard – this is clearly the advantage of staying there over a more traditional Sheraton for example. One notable feature was the wood blinds in a window above the bed to allow natural sun light into the bathroom but they could be controlled from the bedroom not the bathroom which was a bit odd. Dining At check-in the staff told me because they don't have a lounge, they provide free mini-bar as an elite benefit. I am not sure if it’s for Platinum and above, or perhaps only for Ambassador Elites? It's been a while since I saw mini-bar free booze of that level of quality in any hotel, which included Grey Goose, sparkling wine, and local made "burnt" Limoncello - everything could be refilled unlimited. Having all these drinks in the room made it less compelling to go to the hotel bar but the hotel had an attractive one. Normally the points offered by Marriott if we forego breakfast is a pittance, but at The Ivens it was 3k pts per person per day; 6k pts for a couple is non-negligible compared to the normally very low 1k pts per stay. Service Service was generally ok although I would note they were sometimes quite slow in responding to requests, but eventually got the job done each time. Wifi Wifi worked well with speed of 35-40 Mbps. Overall If the rooms were larger and if I could count on material elite upgrades other than simply view and balcony, I would be more positive about this hotel. For people who want anything larger than the Ivens room type, it possibly requires to book the Capelo Suite straight up which sells for a material premium over the lesser room types. It is questionable to me whether this extra is warranted given that we can also have suites at other decent hotels in the city for much less. However if I was travelling solo I would feel the room I had in my last stay was fine I would be happy with a hotel of a higher level like Ivens, by compromising on room size.
