Hi COG31 welcome to FT and in particular the BA board

1) Yes I'm afraid you are kidding yourself - it is only 6 months you can go back and claim miles for. You can however do this on line so need to still have any paperwork.

2) No use for the tier points so it just depends on whether you want staus on United or more BA miles for award flights.
