The alternative is waiting in a longer line, while waiting for 1 or 2 agents to resolve some type of ticketing/"flat tire"/seating issue (there is always one that stalls the line), and you stand in wishing there's a self check-in option.
in DEN, and no, the alternative was one of the 4 agents, all insisting you go to a kiosk first, and then being directed to one agent who became the bottleneck.
any efficiency they hoped to achieve was eroded because it was as another has called it, a circus. It was chaos. There weren’t nearly enough people for a bag check to take over ten minutes. Never mind being a 1k flying first class.
OLCI, if they want a self service let it be self service. This was nothing more than adding another step and require two lines instead of one.

Haven't been to SFO since last month but frankly, if the check in service hasn't improved at all (with seemingly always so few agents that actually do something other than point you to a self serve kiosk), then I could care less how pretty the signage is...
