Curbside bag-checking should still be an option right? My trip last week I didn't bother trying curbside since I parked in the garage and went right up the elevator to check-in, which exposed me to the circus show of waiting in lines to wait in lines!
Where did you have to wait in line to wait in line? I'm guessing SFO?
The alternative is waiting in a longer line, while waiting for 1 or 2 agents to resolve some type of ticketing/"flat tire"/seating issue (there is always one that stalls the line), and you stand in wishing there's a self check-in option.
