I figured out what the diamond reminded me of! My DL Diamond Medallion tags from like 6 years ago! This is the secret United check in for DL Diamond members!!!!

I usually OLCI, then go to the Priority desk (which AA and DL still have), hand my ID and my bag to check. Takes about as much time as the kiosk circus. One thing UA has almost always done for me as non-UA *G is to give me E+ for free on the day of departure. With the kiosk it only gave paid options. I tried again at the gate and this feature seems to be gone too, as agents have a graphic overlay over the computer system, similar to the kiosk.
Maybe they will reverse this policy, they did reverse it once before. When the self service check ins were first installed at JFK for several months the agents shouted at passengers that everyone had to try using self service check ins at least 2 times. Only if they were still unsuccessful they could then talk to an agent. Since I was flying monthly to a visa required country, it was a stupid waste of time. After about 3 months they relented system-wide.

What is illogical is that United prefers people to check luggage rather than overload the passenger cabin. Yet they are making it less attractive to do so.
