Next month I’m flying domestic into T3 on AA in the morning and out of T5 on BA In the evening. These are two separate tickets so I am guessing I wouldn’t be able to thru-check?

Also. I’d quite like to nip into the FL (assuming open by then) to get a shower and breakfast. My only concern is that the luggage will be by itself at reclaim for a bit. It’s too big for carry-on. Any thoughts?

If your trip is on a single ticket your bag should be checked through from AA in 3 to BA in 5. They drive a cart with the transfers from AA to terminal 5 and then the various handlers come and pick up theirs. Having seen it in the flesh it's all very, aehm, rustic compared to Heathrow.
The pick-up-and-re-check ballet is only for the other way round, i.e. coming from outside the US and into the country.
