My only reason to use a travel agent would be if it were a really complex itinerary.
I know, the IRROPS scenario is the main concern with buying from Expedia. If you buy it from AA though you lose out on the BA Chase Avios bonus, which can be substantial, so that's a major downside. Having said that, you shouldn't be concerned about the GBP pricing from BA.com if you charge it to your BA Chase visa as you'll pay the same in USD as you would from Expedia or AA, give or take a few cents. That's a great thing about the BA Chase card. I currently live in Europe and use my BA Chase Visa for everything, and I incur no extra costs due to the FX translation when paying in EUR or GBP as compared to my EUR or GBP cards.

Incidentally, aside from the USD pricing, there may be another advantage to using Expedia vs BA.com for EU-originating itineraries. Expedia.com has access to a different booking code inventory for the US market, so if a certain class (say A, I, or T) is no longer available for the EU/UK POS, BA.com won't be able to issue a ticket at that fare, but Expedia still might be able to as it will have access to the inventory for the US POS, which may still show availability in that specific class. It's happened to me a few times.
