Which country did you buy the ticket? In case it's point of sale related, but I guess they are looking for redemption space on the JL services. There is an option for the agent to check with oneworld liaison to see if space can be opened up. BA tends only to use commercial space when their own flights are cancelled by them, not for other airlines.
We bought it in the UK (paying in GBP) but first departure was from AMS (to save on taxes). I'm surprised to hear it requires redemption availability as it is a cancelled flight - I thought in those cases as long as there was a seat, they could book us onto that seat.
