As a general point even if this was covered by EC261 then a 17 hour connection may well be deemed an appropriate connection if there were no other options. You can use ExpertFlyer or a similar tool to see if the other options are indeed waitlisted.

JAL may be able to help with advice, but they can't touch a BA ticket unless this happened under airport control, and I presume the flight is still some way off.
Yes it is not till the 23rd. The bit that confuses me (well one of the bits) is that the call centre agent couldn't see availability on JL746 or JL742 on the 23rd, but on JAL's website there appears to be plenty of availability. Is it worth me just waiting a bit and then trying again?
