Oh, I understand that. In fact, they've used anything from north of Iceland to flying over Spain or Portugal for TLV-EWR, depending on headwind patterns. What seemed really unusual is making an abrupt flight change over Italy as if they were intentionally avoiding a route over Romania and Poland (which would be typical for a northern TATL route going westbound).
