Depending on which DTW-LHR flight one is flying, the remaining options to get to LHR may be limited or nil. DTW is one of the nicer hubs in DL's system and most people have no issues with extended layovers there. The flight change sounds completely rational to me.
*IF* there were any issues day of departure on the DCA-DTW leg OP has several options to LHR via JFK, IAD, BOS or ATL. It’s not like DL (or partner VS) only fly to LHR from DTW.
