The most likely cause is they are not syncing their local bookings or locally sold upgrades with the Marriott booking system. Their should be a penalty for doing this, as the outcome is almost always going to be a bad outcome for the SNA system. At least they reached out to let the OP know, not like say a certain property on Mykonos.
The excuse is always like this. Marriott's inventory was not up to date so they assign SNA suite to unavailable suite.
Interestingly, when someone book a cash rate for room/suite from Marriott reservation system, the issue magically never happen.
If the root cause is Marriott inventory system,, then supposedly booking cash rate using the same system will cause same issue.
Wonder why.
