I don't think people complain about short hops (e.g., IAD-EWR), but when it goes over 500 miles, there is some passenger loss created by people using alternate airports or other carriers.
You are absolutely right, but what percentage of people actually care? I, for one, certainly do and will change my itinerary if there is a RJ on a flight over 1 to 1.5 hours.
