I'd take a cheap flight somewhere like CPH, HAM, etc and start the train ride there. Saves a day or two compared to ferry to Stockholm, trains through Sweden & Copenhagen. The Baltic/Polish route is even longer (I think) as the train network is not very extensive or fast. But if time is not an issue, either way could work and be interesting.

(Interrail trips anno 198x come to mind - some of the crazier ones among us went all the way up to Norway and then down to Morocco)
