I remember a flight I was taking from SLC - SEA where my seat neighbor was bumped out of first because of a carry-on cat. I missed most of the discussion but it sounded like the carrier couldn't fit under the seat in front (it's one of those angled, lie-flat seats) and so he had to move back into Comfort plus. Since you're flying first I would definitely check the type of plane you're flying!
