You're going to have to just pay to upgrade, you're not getting upgraded on Hawaii flights without high-level status. I'm ExPlat and I won't get upgraded all the time... I recommend premium economy for the westbound and business class for the eastbound (overnight) return.

You will find more options coming from the easy coast if you're willing to route through HNL, the legacies all have codeshares with Hawaiian. As others have mentioned, only United flies direct to OGG from the east coast.
