I'm a bit late to this post but here we go.
I think that WestJet's loyalty program is a joke mainly because of the poor earning rates. For me, I joined Delta's Skymiles program as DL and WS have parterships meaning that you'll earn MQM and MQS on eligilbe class fares on WS. Also with Delta, you get to earn MQM and MQS on Skyteam partners although to make this work we'll have to transit somewhere in one of Delta's hubs if you're based in Canada like me. Westjet's fares are relatively lower than Air Canada's meaning that it could be easier to earn status with more benefits with Delta's Skymile program? Also with Delta, your choices are not that limited meaning that when you fly internationally, you'll have more chances to earn points
I'm still new to North America's FF programs as I was previosuly based in Sydney (Australia) and Qantas has done similar things by parterning up with Jetstar (a LCC), which also allows earning of Status Credits and Points on eligible fares
