Edit: For those who are in the same situation, I just called Los Angeles enrollment center and they said I just need to walk in, no appointment needed. Just bring my current Global Entry card and my US passport and that's all they need. Once they update my passport in the system, I then will have to go online and order a new Global Entry card. It costs $25.
Regarding the need for a "new Global Entry card", I'd say that depends. The physical GE card is only used at land border crossings, and is not used at airports. If you use GE to enter the US at a land border crossing, the RFID chip in the physical GE card is needed - such as to access Nexus lanes at the US/Canada border. On the other hand, if your only use of GE is to enter the US via air, then you could defer getting a new GE card until your next GE renewal. Just a thought.
