I think that's a fine lens to view the program though! Anything more than that is armchair CEO'ing.
M fares are of particular interest to some because it's the only fare class that 75K's get instant upgrades on, that Golds don't. So if someone regularly looks for and buys instant upgrades, and is considering whether or not it's worth it to get/maintain 75k, then the price difference between M and K is exactly the discount they're looking at getting/losing.
